Molly Jane
Naarm artist Molly Jane's debut EP is one of the most honest things we've heard in a while. Five tracks of indie soul. Soulful, warm, and impossible to rush through.
babytooth has been seven years in the making. Molly Jane has spent that time deep in Naarm's alternative soul scene. Writing, curating, collaborating. This EP is the payoff. It's named after the baby tooth she never lost. She was born without the adult tooth to replace it, so it's still there, top right.
Sonically, the EP floats somewhere between indie folk and alternative soul, with electronic textures that surface just when you think you've got it figured out. The songs trace the arc of opening up to someone for the first time. Learning how to love, how to be seen, and what to do when it doesn't work out. The cover art is a photo of Molly and her mum from her mum's wedding. It's a small detail, but it tells you everything about this record.

01Take a Look (Prelude)
A warm, meditative opener co-written with Lewis Hosie on a Prophet synth. Short and sweet, but easy to get lost in. Soulful and summery with an electronic undercurrent that sets the tone for everything that follows.
02Heavy
The closest the EP gets to conventional indie soul. Written while falling in love for the first time, you can feel the confidence and doubt sitting side by side. Folk-tinged vocals over a sophisticated, tricky arrangement. By the time it fades out, she's made you believe she'll be there.
03Let You In
Dreamy, almost cosmic. A striking contrast between lyrics ready to explode with feeling and an arrangement that stays beautifully restrained. Heavy's mirror image: where that track was about convincing someone else, this one's about letting them see you back.
04Cough
More introspective, more intimate. The guitar takes on the role of a second voice. A quiet duet about the kind of love that didn't quite land. Unrequited or bad timing, the kind that hurts because you opened up and it didn't come back.
05Babytooth
The title track drops the tempo and leans further into electronic territory, building slowly into something more outgoing and vibrant. A slow-burn about unpacking inherited beliefs, unlearning the survival versions of yourself, and choosing to rebuild.
